Old Friends Are Gold.

Thinking of the faces in the window

That you passed along the way
-- Kris Kristofferson "This Old Road"

This morning brought a cloudless sky and temperatures well below freezing (-6 degrees Fahrenheit at 6 a.m.). So cold that the morning paper stroll merged with the morning constitutional as paws warm from slumber sank through a crusted top-layer to fine powdery snow beneath. Good lighting to sit by the window to paint, yet here the time passes with laptop on thighs. Alternating between watching wood embers glow, surfing the internet and listening to thoughts wander.

A friend posted the Kristofferson song on her Facebook page and today has the feeling of the chorus "ain't you come a long way down this old road..." Memory speaks of yesterday. Lessons learned. Loves won and lost.

Grandmother always quoted:
"Make new friends, but keep the old.
New friends are silver.
Old friends are gold"
As someone who has moved around a lot in life and is reserved by nature, friendships - regardless of time span - have always been important to me. After all - you can choose your friends. I've been blessed to have several good friends over the years. Yet in moving around I've lost touch with many of them.

Some of us have re-connected through the magic of the internet and social media. How wonderful to be able to speak with friends without having to be face-to-face. Our worlds have gotten bigger and smaller at the same time. Bigger as new knowledge is brought to light. Smaller as extending our hands in friendship is only a keystroke away.

Today I am thankful for social media.
